Full Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Nairobi to Tsavo East National Park (roughly 4-5 hours), Kenya's largest park, famous for its red-dust elephants - their colour from dust-bathing in the park's distinctive soil. Afternoon game drive around Aruba Dam. Overnight on a full-board basis.
A full day of game drives across Tsavo East's open plains, including a visit to the Yatta Plateau - the world's longest lava flow - and Lugard Falls on the Galana River. Overnight on a full-board basis.
Drive into Tsavo West National Park, stopping at Mzima Springs to view hippo and crocodile through an underwater viewing chamber. Afternoon game drive around the Shetani lava flows. Overnight on a full-board basis.
A final morning game drive in Tsavo West, then depart for the road transfer back to Nairobi, with a lunch stop en route.
Best Time to Visit
Jun-Oct and Jan-Feb for the clearest game viewing
High Season - Jun-Oct & Jan-Feb
Dry weather makes for the clearest game viewing, with animals gathering at rivers and waterholes. Masai Mara river crossings peak July-October. Expect busier parks and the highest rates of the year.
Low Season - Mar-May & Nov
The "green season" brings lush scenery, dramatic skies and newborn wildlife, with far fewer visitors and the lowest accommodation rates. Expect afternoon showers, muddier roads and a handful of camps closed for maintenance.
What to Expect
Tsavo East National Park is Kenya's largest park, known for its "red elephants" - stained by the park's iron-rich dust - along with the Yatta Plateau and the Galana River's Lugard Falls.
Tsavo West National Park is more varied and scenic, with the spring-fed Mzima Springs offering rare underwater views of hippo and crocodile, dramatic Shetani lava flows, and resident populations of lesser kudu and fringe-eared oryx found in few other parks.
